STORY
Comparing these two nvidia rtx graphics cards was an interesting experience where I was able to see very quickly the size difference of the 3090 founder edition in comparison to the 3080 with a smaller body; both the Nvidia RTX 3080 and the 3090 Founder Edition Graphic Card have a very close design overall except the crossfire connection on the 3090 geforce card.
For gamers who are mostly into casual gaming solid on gaming with a 4K resolution monitor that offers UHD capabilities then going with the rtx 3080 graphics card would be a better choice, and for those of you who are more elite like into the 8K side with also a TV display that supports it well going with the rtx 3090 graphics card may be your card choice.
There are two types of user level for each of these nvidia RTX graphic cards, where the geforce rtx 3080 may be more suitable for gaming you will find the geforce rtx 3090 more suitable for creators; both the Nvidia RTX 3080 and 3090 Founder Edition Graphic Cards will play 4k resolutions well and both will work fine for creator level but the 3090 offer way more capability as explained.
Installing the Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card inside most mid-size gaming cases will have a more comfortable fit with the idea of most gamers into 4k gaming resolution is the ideal graphics card, leaving you with some space leftover for additional cooling fans or even moving cables around better the 3080 rtx was a better fit overall in comparison; allowing for a cleaner look into the tempered glass which allowed other components to display well when looking through the tempered glass side panel.
Going with the nvidia geforce rtx 3090 on the other hand would be a monster card in size so choosing a bigger case rather than a mid-size may give you a better layout inside the case, regardless of this though the nvidia rtx 3090 review revealed that it had an acceptable fitting due to it’s elegant slim compact design considering it’s size it looked good inside the nzxt h510 elite case I tested in; besides that cables along with other components around were hidden it did look good through the tempered glass.
We find that both Nvidia RTX 3080 and the 3090 Founder Edition Graphic Card use the same 8 pin power adapter which is good, and both have the same RGB lighting feature so that is not missing on one or the other; but for gamers wanting to connect two graphics card into one gaming desktop then going with the Nvidia RTX 3090 is the option here since it offers the crossfire connector.
Comparing both rtx cards we find that each can run in a build using at least a 850W power supply so that is similar, while also both have very close core clock speeds and use the same architecture technology; the one main difference we see due to the size would be that choosing the 3080 takes about 2 pci-e slots on the case whereas the 3090 card close to the size of 3 slots as shown on the nzxt case example.
The NVIDIA RTX 3080 is a powerful GPU intended for 4K gaming, The NVIDIA RTX 3090 is an absolute beast of a GPU for gamers and professionals; Choosing the 3080 will cost half as much as the RTX 3090 yet its gaming performance isn’t too far behind.
It’s clear the RTX 3090 is the superior card in terms of raw performance, it has more CUDA cores, more ray tracing cores, more than double the GDDR6X VRAM; both are Ampere GPUs and If you’re looking to game at 4K with smooth frame rates and don’t want to spend the extra money on an RTX 3090 then choosing the RTX 3080 makes a whole lot of sense.
Hardware
CUDA cores is 8,704 on the RTX 3080 and 10,496 on the RTX 3090.
Base Clock is 1.44GHz on the 3080 and 1.40GHz on the rtx 3090.
Boost clock on the rtx 3080 card is 1.71GHz and 1.70GHz for the 3090.
Memory of the 3090 gpu starts at 10GB GDDR6X whereas the 3090 uses 24GB GDDR6X.
Memory bus are similar too 320-bit o nthe 3080 card then 384-bit over on 3090 rtx.
Memory clock are almost close too with the 3080 at 19Gbps and the 3090 using 19.5Gbps.
There is a bit difference on the Memory bandwidth where 3080 has 760GB/s compared to 936GB/s on the 3090 card.
RT cores are also close on both with 68 on the rtx 3080 then on the 3090 is 82 so not too far.
Power on both are 320W for the 3080 and 350W on the 3090.
Features
The rtx 3080 fits in most cases where as the 3090 may require a bigger size case.
Using the 3090 provide you the option to crossfire two cards in the same build where as the 3080 is not possible.
Both offer similar connectivity on the display ports but the 3090 support up to 8k resolution keeping the 3080 at max 4k.
Each card featured the rgb lighting and both can be controlled using the corsair icue software.
Using the 3080 rtx card will allow for other components to show through the glass side panel better where as the 3090 may hide them.
Choosing the 3090 provide added memory for professionals and creators needing extra ram while also being powerful enough for both monitors at 4k and smart tvs at up to 8k which is limited on the 3080 only supporting a gamer experience but decent enough power for pros too.
